Seamless ferry boarding for passengers thanks to a modern e-gate system

The cruise and transport shipping companie Color Line has a strong international reputation for providing passengers with exceptional travel experiences. Recently, the company’s focus has been to upgrade its systems, with the aim of streamlining and automating all aspects of the passenger experience: check-in, ID verification, gate access and more. One important step is the installation of ARGUS PORT e-gates from dormakaba at its terminals in Oslo and Kiel. This has halved waiting times, reduced operational demands and made it much easier to ensure on-site and on-ferry security.

Challenges

How can passenger be processed smoothly at peak times while delivering a strong customer experience?

  • The ARGUS PORT e-gate system from dormakaba, paired with local support, guarantees smooth passenger flows even during peak periods.

  • Contactless technology facilitates touch-free, convenient entry for passengers while ensuring good hygiene.

  • Gates can be configured as desired for bidirectional use, allowing for simple management of varying passenger flows.

  • Integrated access controls and automated alerts boost overall security.

  • The intelligent e-gate system regulates and separates passengers efficiently within supervised access areas.

Technical challenges

There were multiple technical challenges involved in upgrading Color Line’s terminals for ferries in Oslo and Kiel, not least managing high passenger volumes, keeping embarkation and disembarkation efficient and secure, and finding a standardized solution. Additionally, Color Line needed a product that would require only minimal changes to its existing infrastructure.

Enhancing efficiency and security

The answer to these challenges is the ARGUS PORT e-gate system. Installed in parallel by dormakaba, the system has a bidirectional lane to facilitate passenger and crew movements.

Centralized control platform for streamlined operations

The modern e-gate system for ferry boarding is connected to the centralized control platform via ConnectorOne. An RC touchscreen was installed for efficient unit management, giving the Color Line team access to real-time monitoring and controls for all gate operations. Staff can resolve potential issues and address security alerts promptly.

Resolving pain points with reliable technology

The intelligent e-gate system from dormakaba directly addresses Color Line’s challenges:

Automated passenger flows: E-gate sensors ensure continuous passenger movement, preventing bottlenecks.

Enhanced security: Real-time monitoring and alert systems provide access to authorized individuals only.

Scalability for growth: The ARGUS PORT e-gate system is highly flexible, reflecting the ever-evolving needs of the terminal.

Local service and support: A dedicated local service team is on hand to provide prompt assistance if any operational issues arise, minimizing downtime and ensuring processes remain uninterrupted.
